Summer Week 4 - Seasons/Weather Week!

Friday, June 24, 2016

It's officially summer!!  Um, so those 105 & 108 degree days were considered spring?  Awesome.

To bring in the new season, we learned all about the changing of the seasons, what causes the changes, and some of the characteristics of each season, including weather.

We got a slow start this week because I had a TON of work to do. Several orders, getting ready for a Jamberry Fundraiser, etc.  Just as I'm trying to avoid, the girls were a little bored Tuesday and Wednesday.  (Ken had Monday off so that was pretty much an extra weekend day for all of us.)  Apparently this summer I've trained my kids to be completely uninterested in watching TV.  I guess that's a good thing, right? However, no TV distraction for Ellie = messes, more messes, and general TROUBLE.  Sophia has been interested in giving her sister makeovers and apparently Ellie thought she'd take a crack at it.

Did I mention messes? Playing in there rooms left total destruction.  After a ton of back and forth (not to mention the gentle reminder of the day all their stuff ended up in a garbage bag) they cleaned everything up and yelled for me to come check things out.  This was what I found.  Dorks. Then the marched around Ellie's room saying something about cleaning.
We ended the week on a high note.  Wednesday afternoon, we started looking into types of clouds.  We made predictions about the weather based on what we saw.  Then we had dinner outside and Ken & I demonstrated the Earth's orbit around the sun and it's effect on the seasons.

The next morning, we watched a bunch of videos that we found here.  This site has a ton of cool weather related activities and I think we'll come back in the future because there is so much to do!

Next, Sophia made a list of everything they could remember about each of the seasons.  Then they went through their stickers to find some that they could use on this project.

In the center is the sun with the Earth orbiting around it.  You can sort of see where she drew a dot to represent us and our proximity to the sun.  Then she wrote down some of the things from her list, added stickers, and she and Ellie drew & colored some other things.

#FunFriday was awesome!  We found all of these fun cloud/rain/weather experiments online which could ONLY mean it was time for another edition of #SophiasScienceShow!  And this time, Grammy was in town!
Here are the tutorials for the experiments: Rain Cloud, Cloud in a Jar, Tornado
For the lightning experiment, we just added the liquid from a glow stick to the rain cloud.  Have you played with that stuff yet?  SOOOOO FUN!  Like seriously in my top 3 things to do with kiddos.
